Character Name: Rudolf Ushiromiya
Canon: Umineko no Naku Koro Ni
Canon Point: Episode 7: Requiem of the Golden Witch, Tea Party, during his conversation with Eva
Is your character Dead, Undead or Alive: Alive
History: Wiki
In EP7, Rudolf and Kyrie are shown to be the culprits behind the Rokkenjima mass murder incident. After the parents solve the riddle and find the gold together, initially agreeing to split it evenly, 'Beatrice' appears and explains her original plan. There are explosives burried beneath the surface of a great portion of the island, left over from WWII, which she planned to detonate at midnight through a timed device. She even reveals the old west style guns which would have been used to systematically murder the Ushiromiyas first. But because they solved the riddle, she won't carry out the epitaph. In addition, she's already cashed a billion yen worth of the gold and offers up a bank card to it. The siblings and their spouses debate how the profits should be divided, going against what they had agreed on before, and soon a fight breaks out in which Natsuhi and Krauss are accidentally shot and killed by Eva and Hideyoshi, or rather the guns they fought with the other two over. Which of each pair really ended up causing the guns to go off, who knows. But Rosa threatens them to try to extort more money for herself, while Eva insists they use the explosives to cover up the accident and split Krauss' family's share among the remaining three families. As the two women fight, suddenly, Rosa falls to the ground, shot from behind by Kyrie, who initially seems to agree and sympathise with Eva. However, as she reloads and aims her gun at Eva and Hideyoshi in turn, she chides them for thinking too small, not being greedy enough, and kills the other couple as they try in vain to reload the guns in their own hands. Rudolf takes the bank card from Eva's body and pockets it as Kyrie shoots Beatrice. Rudolf makes Kyrie promise she won't try to hurt Battler, momentarily trying and failing to explain that she's his mother. Her response is that he has to trick Battler, or convince him to keep quiet, otherwise, she sees it within her right to kill him at any time. They set the timer for the explosives and proceed to the mansion, Rudolf phones the kids in the guest house to meet them one at a time 'for a test Kinzo's set up to determine the next head of the family', while Kyrie guns down the servants. When they meet up again, she insists he has to commit a murder as well, to prove he's serious. So, she sets him to George, and after a moment of hesitation, he shoots George down, meets up with Kyrie again and is given the task of convincing Battler. As he waits for his son, Eva appears, apparently having fallen unconscious in shock, but not hit. They argue before and Rudolf mocks her, trying to stall as his gun has been set aside, but ultimately he's shot in the head and killed.
Personality: On the surface, Rudolf is just a nice guy. His nieces and nephews see him as the fun uncle, he’s always cracking jokes and fooling around, rarely serious, not strict at all, completely laid back. You might not want to invite him to your dinner party, though, his jokes are pretty crude and he’s a known womanizer and flirt…on the other hand, those who wouldn’t be offended could get a great conversation going with him.
These things are true, he’s not lying about it at all, but of course, there’s always a little more to someone than meets the eye.
Though this is a common trend with each of the Ushiromiya siblings, none of them know the others feel the same way, so, Rudolf is still intimidated by his older siblings, Krauss and Eva. When they were children, they were often reprimanded by their father in very harsh ways. Frankly, they were abused. To blow off steam, Krauss as the eldest would pick on each of the younger siblings, Eva in turn would take it out on the two under her. So, Rudolf had three people’s worth of beating and yelling thrown at him. Krauss broke possessions and hit them, Eva mostly went at it verbally or tricked them into doing things that would cause Krauss or their father to punish them. Rudolf certainly wasn’t exempt in torturing those under him, though. Only one, Rosa, was younger, and she describes his treatment of her as “when Krauss was around, he was friendly with Krauss; when Eva was around he was friendly with Eva. And when Krauss wasn’t around, he was violent like Krauss, and when Eva wasn’t around, he played dirty like Eva. And even though he was also bullied most of the time, when Krauss and Eva weren’t around, he gave me two people’s worth of bullying.”
He still talks down to Rosa and bosses her around when he’s stressed out about family issues. They all revert back to some form of their childhood hierarchy with the family meeting – it takes all three younger siblings to stand up to Krauss. So, while he’s not alone in it, his older siblings still intimidate him and he can’t quite let those things go, though he knows, or at least thinks, he should. He tries not to show it, though.
Rudolf is the forced family man, he was sort of thrown into it against his will. Though he would have been happy to be a father at some point, it happened too early for his liking and so, with Battler he’s not very good at handling his son. That’s not to say he’s a particularly bad or absent parent, he’s a great dad, he loves to play with Ange, he was the same when Battler was a child, and most importantly, he’s fun. But because Battler was born too early and suddenly, and had no contact with his father through the years of truly ‘growing up’, Rudolf can’t connect with or parent him very well. It makes him uncomfortable, he doesn’t know what to say or do, he wants to reconnect with his son for several reasons – simply that Battler IS his son, for Ange, for Kyrie, and for Asumu – and so he tries to treat Battler like an adult and crack jokes, but there are still the uneasy feelings of ‘he hates me’ and ‘it’s been too long to fix it now’. Part of it is that he wants to tell Battler and Kyrie the truth of Battler’s birth and his reasons for marrying Kyrie, but is afraid of their reactions – chances are high that they will both hate him for it, it might drive Battler further from him.
From all this, it’s easy to deduce that he is actually pretty weak-willed and a bit of a coward. It doesn’t seem that way at first, but not only is he afraid of so much, he goes against his own sense of morals to make people like Kyrie (…mostly Kyrie, actually) happy and do what he needs to to further his business because it’s expected of him. To an extent, he does want to do these underhanded things even though he knows it’s wrong, but a great deal of it is being too afraid of what will happen if he doesn’t. He does put his own gain above others, he is selfish and greedy, but what is key is that he feels guilt for it. Switching Kyrie and Asumu’s babies and lying to them about it, cheating on Asumu with Kyrie, going along with Kyrie and killing his family. He is a truly terrifying and horrible person simply because he can ignore his morals and guilt and do anything, even murder, despite it. If you simply feel no guilt, or don’t realize what you’re doing is wrong, though it is still going to be wrong and you are still fully to blame, and though it sounds horrible to feel no guilt, it is much worse to realize what you’re doing and do it anyway. He gets a rush out of doing bad, it’s exciting, partially because it’s forbidden, and partially because he likes to place himself in the role of a western villain. He also likes to be the western hero, the cowboy, the John Wayne figure, but, doesn’t the villain have more fun? He admits it in EP7, when Kyrie insists he’ll enjoy it when he has doubts about being part of her killingspree, after shooting George he laughs and says, “you were right, it IS fun”. And, before being killed by Eva, speaks of himself as a western film villain and talks about how he’s always wanted to make a great dying speech as is common in those movies – so he does.
There is a saying that goes, "to know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice", this greatly applies to Rudolf.
Similarly, he’s a businessman. He’ll do whatever he has to to make his company prosper. Though he had quite a bit of help from Kyrie with his company, he had a good ‘business’ (read: con) going even in college.
It’s mentioned to some extent above, but his love of westerns has to be said. Rudolf grew up on John Wayne-type movies and still loves them, to an almost childish extent. He loves to liken himself to the hero or the villain, depending on the situation, and he collects western guns and practices shooting with them together with Kyrie (though owning guns is illegal in Japan…).
Items on your character at canon point:
-Suit
-A handful of .45 long-colt bullets
-Winchester m94 sawed-off shotgun, modified to take .45 long-colts (a bit broken, it shoots low)
-Pack of cigarettes
-Lighter
-Money card
Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:
Abilities/Strengths: Rudolf's good with a gun, very good with a gun. Especially the kind you would see in cowboy movies. He's resourceful and intelligent despite his usual attitude and willing to do about anything to get out on top. He's willing to take risks, and if those risks hurt him, he'll pull himself together right away and find another route no matter what.
Weaknesses: Vices of many kinds. Smoking, gambling, drinking, sex, money, narcisism and pride. On the flip side, he's pretty weak for his kids, he'd do just about anything for Ange or Battler. As for Kyrie, he relies on her too much, while he's quite capable himself, he's been following her advice for so long he's almost forgotten how to act on his own, is easily lead by her, and easily scared of her. As well as his older siblings and father.

Shit. He knew they shouldn't split up. But when Kyrie gets like that, there's just no arguing with her. Not just arguing, talking back, contradicting or suggesting anything at all. You just don't speak your mind to a woman with that kind of look on her face. Most people probably saw it as just any old smile, but Rudolf always recognised that particular way of smiling in his wife. The way her lips got thin, a serene look in her eyes. That's the look that told him he'd better shut the hell up and do whatever she says. That's the look that said she was well and truly ruthless, a reminder of what kind of family she came from. And when the former heir to a crime syndicate starts getting scary like that? You'd better be on her good side.
That's why he'd let her take the guest house on her own. Of course she could handle herself, especially with a little girl and a few old servants who were all probably asleep anyway. But he had a bad feeling, and really there wasn't any reason to split up, he'd done his initiation murder. They could have gone to talk to Battler together. He could have told them both then, they could have a happy family reunion and that would definitely clinch it! There's no way Battler would rat them out if they had a heartfelt talk like that. But no, she had to get into one of those scary moods.
He sighs, flopping back on the bed. What now? For the first time in his life, all he wants is to see his wife and son, and yet there's no way he can. If he could just make sure they're safe, what with Eva alive and running around with a gun. Apparently, he thinks, he's doomed to failure. At least Ange's safe at home. So long as one of her family members returns to her.
